The environmental group Green Power has launched a campaign calling on local producers to collect and recycle the drink cartons that they manufacture.
Such cartons aren't currently recycled because they are made up of a mix of paper, plastic and aluminium, and they mostly end up in landfills.
Green Power's assistant senior education and project officer, Adonia Lam, said the situation is very serious and has become a huge environmental burden.
“In Hong Kong every year we dump around more than 43,000 tonnes of drink cartons. And the number can reach about 3.7 billion cartons”, Lam said. “We can see that every day the number of dumped cartons can fill 16.9 Hong Kong Stadiums”.
