About 100 people comprising refugees and concern groups marched to the Immigration Tower in Wan Chai on Monday to protest against how the Hong Kong government treats non-refoulement claimants.

They demanded a timely and fair screening mechanism, and for the community to stop discriminating against asylum seekers.

Peter Maina from the Refugee Union said the administration had so far been doing a bad job and those seeking asylum are being branded as thieves and rapists by some groups.

The protest came as the United Nations marked Monday as World Refugee Day and said the number of refugees worldwide has a hit a record 65 million.
