Local think tank Civic Exchange said on Friday that a quarter of Hong Kong's population has only less than two square-metres of public open space – which is about the size of a toilet cubicle.

It said it conducted a survey on how much open or recreational space each person in the territory has and found that people living in stand-alone buildings in old, densely-populated areas like Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei were the worst-affected.

The group said the government should stop re-zoning sites in these areas to build flats and adopt ways to provide recreational space for people living there.
