Former Financial Secretary John Tsang on Sunday urged people to support Carrie Lam following her victory in the Chief Executive election.

Tsang, who came second in the poll ahead of third-placed Woo Kwok-hing, fought back tears as told reporters that the campaign experience had made him a better person.

He also apologised, saying he had not been able to meet people’s expectations.

“I believe that Carrie, like myself, will also stand by the core values of Hong Kong. I wish to call upon all of you to lend her your full support so that she and her government will be able to bring about a more harmonious future for a better Hong Kong,” Tsang said.

During election debates, Tsang and Lam accused each other of failing to do enough to tackle the territory’s problems while both serving as part of CY Leung’s administration.

Tsang won 365 votes in Sunday's poll, after getting the backing of many pan-democratic members of the Election Committee. Lam received more than double the amount of support, winning the election with 777 votes. Woo trailed far behind with 21 votes.
