A public policy think tank has urged the government to review the way it charges people for freshwater, to deter wastage.
Civic Exchange said the water tariff level here is artificially low, because it is being subsidised by the government.
It added that the per capita daily water consumption of Hong Kong households is 21 percent higher than the global average.
The organisation's chairman, Evan Auyang, said the SAR's water tariff system needs to be revamped to encourage conservation.
He said the think tank is not calling for a hike in water charges for everyone. “But those organisations and individuals who have a very high consumption rate … we have to raise the rate for them,” he said.
Auyang told RTHK's Candice Wong that Singapore has used its tariff system effectively to control water wastage.
