Demosisto general secretary Joshua Wong on Tuesday called on the people of Hong Kong to make use of President Xi Jinping’s visit to the city this week to press for the release of Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo.
Participating in a protest in front of Beijing's liaison office over the issue, Wong called Liu’s case a “political murder by the communist regime”. He called on Beijing to allow the Nobel Peace Prize winner, who has been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer, to be given his freedom.
"We also urge people around Hong Kong, it is time for us to ask for the release of Liu Xiaobo during the visit of President Xi," he said.
Wong said they will take their action further during the visit of President Xi, and through peaceful and non-violent means demand more democracy and universal suffrage for Hong Kong.
About 30 protesters took part in the protest organised by Demosisto and the League of Social Democrats.
The Hong Kong Alliance, along with some democratic parties and mainland advocate groups also held a protest outside the Beijing's liaison office later.
They said the mainland authorities should reveal the real state of Liu Xiaobo’s health and said they feared there is an intention to delay treatment.
Former Legco lawmaker Cyd Ho, who participated in the protest, said Beijing can not deny its moral responsibility in this issue.
