A supporters' group for recently-deceased mainland dissident Liu Xiaobo has called for a global memorial to be held in honour of the Nobel Peace Prize winner.

In a statement, the “Freedom for Liu Xiaobo Action Group” described the mainland government as a ‘totalitarian regime’, which is so fearful of Liu's moral inspiration that they felt the need to scatter his ashes into the sea soon after his death.

The group called for a global memorial to be held for the 61-year-old on Wednesday, the seventh day after his death. According to Chinese custom, this is the day when the dead return to bid farewell to their loved ones.

The group urged participants to place an empty chair, preferably near the sea or a river, to show their respect for the Nobel Peace Laureate.

It also called on people to observe a moment of silence, bow to the chair three times and raise three fingers to express their wish for freedom and hope.

The group urged participants to take photos of their memorial and to share them on social networking sites.
