Two prominent members of the pro-government group on Thursday hailed the prison sentences handed down to three Occupy movement leaders, saying the rule of law needed to be upheld.

DAB lawmaker and solicitor Holden Chow described the sentences as fair and reasonable. He said unlawful assembly is a serious crime.

The serious nature mandates a heavy penalty in order to provide a deterrent effect, he said, adding this was needed to uphold the rule of law in the city.

Liberal Party leader Felix Chung said he respects the court ruling. “This is the rule of law that Hong Kong has, we just respect everything [ruling] that is made by a judge.”

Before the ruling was delivered, a group of around 20 people had demonstrated outside the court, calling for stiffer punishments for the student leaders, chanting "Pay the price in jail!" (Additional reporting by AFP)
