A number of pro-democracy political and civic groups have implored the public to attend a protest march on Sunday in support of activists jailed earlier this week.

Three figureheads of the 2014 Occupy protests, Joshua Wong, Nathan Law, and Alex Chow, were jailed on Thursday for between six and eight months for storming Civic Square just prior to the start of the mass civil disobedience movement.

Another 13 activists were also sentenced to imprisonment for up to 13 months on Tuesday for storming the Legislative Council meeting in 2014 against a controversial development project in the northeastern New Territories.

Former student leader, Lester Shum, said the public shouldn’t be deterred by the judgments.

“This is Carrie Lam and Beijing’s main agenda: to use different [types of] violence… to deter Hong Kong people from political participation to fight against [the] Beijing government, to fight against authoritarian government,” Shum said.

“If this is their main agenda, if this is their main purpose, we must ask ourselves: do we want them to succeed, do we want them to prevail?”
