The vice-chancellor of Hong Kong Baptist University, Roland Chin, said on Tuesday that he would allow students to discuss Hong Kong independence on campus, as long as they don't do anything illegal or dangerous.

Speaking after a ceremony marking the start of the school year, Chin said it's normal for youngsters to have opinions about social issues and speak out against things they think are unjust.

But he said they should always stay within the law.

“They have to take action and abide by the law. Anything they violate the law, they should know the consequence,” he said.

“They need to know the consequence and make decision according to the consequence,” Chin said.

Chin's comments came as students at the Chinese University rejected demands from management that a banner calling for Hong Kong independence be removed.
