The Communist Party's official mouthpiece, the People's Daily, has lashed out at the student unions of SAR universities for promoting the idea of Hong Kong independence.

The newpaper said on Friday that students who put up banners and posters advocating independence are nothing but the foot soldiers of "several famous independence advocates", without naming any names.

An editorial noted that the action, which started at the Chinese University this week before spreading to several other institutions, came despite university officials making it clear that calling for independence is a breach of the Basic Law.

The People’s Daily also praised students who tore down the independence posters saying they had responded with "voluntary acts of justice".

Meanwhile, mainland tabloid the Global Times also published an editorial on the issue saying a female student with a mainland accent who was seen tearing down a poster had done a great job and other students could learn from her boldness.
