The Chinese University said on Friday it will launch an investigation after a student used a derogatory term during a quarrel on campus.

A video circulating on the internet shows a local student, believed to be a former student union leader, shouting and swearing at a man, possibly a mainland student, who was speaking Mandarin.

During the row, the local student used the term "Chee-na" which mimics the word "Shina" used by the Japanese in wartime to refer to China.

In a statement, the university condemned such action and said it had received numerous complaints. It said it would handle the alleged incident seriously.

The confrontation happened near the student union's "democracy wall", where students recently put up posters promoting the idea of Hong Kong independence.

The university reiterated that it does not agree with the advocacy of Hong Kong independence.
