Several groups have staged protests outside the High Court and the Police Headquarters, demanding action against people putting up pro-independence banners on university campuses.

They said the banners are a violation of the Basic Law and the Crimes Ordinance.

The protesters said separatism calls have already crossed the line of academic freedom and freedom of speech.

Ashley Tse, who led a group called Hong Kong Youth Against Independence, called on the Justice Department and the police to take action against the independence advocates.

“It is is clear that according to the Basic Law, Hong Kong is a part of China,” she said.

Tse said there are provisions in criminal law under which the police can take action against such acts.
