The Hong Kong government on Saturday will sign an agreement with mainland officials on locating both Hong Kong and mainland checkpoints for the high-speed rail line at the West Kowloon terminus.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam is expected to sign the deal with Governor of Guangdong Province at Government House on Saturday afternoon.
This will be the first step in the authorities' plan to "lease" part of the future rail terminus for mainland immigration officers to operate in.
The proposal will then have to gain the endorsement of the National People's Congress Standing Committee and trigger a local legislative process before it can be put in place.
The government statement said "following widespread discussions in the community of Hong Kong, including the passage of a motion .. at the Legislative Council", the government is going ahead with the plan aimed to start the train service by the third quarter of next year.
