The Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA) on Wednesday urged Legco to consider scrapping a rule that allows lawmakers to seek the removal of the press and public from a council meeting.

The move was requested for the first time last month, with legislator Chu Hoi-dick using the subsequent debate as a way to filibuster.

The pro-establishment camp has proposed that the Legco president or a committee chair should have to give their permission for such a motion to be moved in future.

But the HKJA says sending journalists out of the council would damage press freedom and the rule should be dropped altogether, or the rule should be changed to make it clear that it can only be used in exceptional circumstances.
