A 31-year-old man has been arrested after customs officials found 35 pieces of gold in the boot of a vehicle at the Shenzhen Bay border control point.

Officers said the suspected smuggling haul, weighing about 35 kilogrammes, was estimated to be worth around HK$11 million.

The gold was found on Wednesday in a car being driven into the territory.

Under the law, anybody found guilty of smuggling unmanifested items is liable to a maximum fine of HK$2 million and imprisonment of up to seven years.
