Electric bicycles are being blamed for a fire that killed five people at a residential area in Beijing on Wednesday.

A Xinhua report said nine others were also injured in the fire that broke out in the early hours of the day. It quoted the firemen as saying the fire originated from the bicycles.

It also said police have detained the owners over the house over illegal developments.

It said the acting mayor of Beijing, Chen Jining, and Communist Party secretary of Beijing Municipal Committee, Cai Qi, visited the spot.

A fire in Beijing earlier this month had led to the evacuation of thousands of undocumented workers from some areas, which triggered some protests against the government action.
