The government has announced that all kindergartens and primary schools will close starting Thursday in light of the flu outbreaks.
Most of the schools were scheduled to close for Lunar New Year next week.
The decision to advance the closure was made after an urgent meeting between officials from the Food and Health Bureau, the Education Bureau and the Labour and Welfare Bureau.
The Education Secretary, Kevin Yeung, said schools will remain open for children who have no one at home to take care of them during the day.
The Centre for Health Protection said on Tuesday that there had been 224 serious flu cases since the start of the year which had claimed 121 lives. Eleven of the serious cases involved people aged below 18 and two of them died.
One more serious flu case was reported on Wednesday morning.
The centre also said its vaccines may run out in two to three weeks.
