A pro-Beijing activist has filed a police report accusing University of Hong Kong professor Benny Tai of sedition with remarks he made recently in Taiwan.

Pro-Beijing groups have been condemning Tai for saying Hong Kong should consider its options – including independence – should China ever become a democracy.

Kenny Po from the Defend Hong Kong Campaign said Tai's comments may have violated relevant laws in the Crimes Ordinance.

Earlier, Po was joined by two dozen protesters outside the police headquarters calling for the prosecution of Tai.

In a related event, around 20 DAB members held a protest outside the Legco building, to call on lawmakers to follow up on Tai's comments, which they said transgressed beyond the scope of academic discussion and amounted to advocating independence.
