A former local deputy to the National People's Congress, Priscilla Lau, has used an appearance at the Hong Kong Book Fair to blast the "ridiculous" decision to award mainland dissident Liu Xiaobo a Nobel peace prize – eight years after he won the award and a year after his death.

Lau said on Friday that Liu had lacked a basic knowledge of Chinese history and it was ridiculous for him to be given the prestigious prize in 2010.

Flanked by former Chief Executive CY Leung, she said the works Liu produced were "a complete mess", and criticised him for trying to "enforce Western ideas on the mainland".

Lau said Liu should not have attempted to instruct China on what it should do given his lack of understanding of the country and the West.

She added that the writer was obviously wrong to suggest that the mainland could have universal suffrage – because there are simply too many people.

The former NPC delegate made the comments on Liu – who died of liver cancer last July while still serving a prison term for alleged subversion – in response to a question about Chinese history.
