Liu Xia, the widow of late Nobel peace prize winner Liu Xiaobo, has been pictured drinking a beer with her friend in Germany, around a month after she left China following years of unofficial house arrest.

Berlin-based dissident writer Liao Yiwu posted a photograph of Liu Xia on social media on Tuesday morning, apparently taken at an open-air restaurant in the German capital.

A caption says "this beer didn't come easy", as well as "Ich bin ein Berliner" – words spoken by former US President John F. Kennedy when he talked about freedom during a speech in West Berlin in 1963.

Liu Xia was put under house arrest on the mainland in 2010 shortly after her husband was detained on subversion charges. He died in custody in July 2017, just weeks after the authorities said he had been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer.

Almost a year to the day since his death, Liu Xia was allowed to leave China for Germany, with officials in the European country saying she was welcome to live and work there for as long as she liked.
