Around 20 protesters gathered outside the University of Hong Kong on Monday, urging the institution to sack associate law professor Benny Tai.

The "Anti Corrupted Money and Hong Kong Independence Concern Group" claimed that Tai has promoted the idea of Hong Kong independence on campus, noting that he was one of the initiators of the 2014 pro-democracy Occupy movement.

They handed a petition to an officer from the university, calling for Tai to be fired.

The group was set up a few years ago after a number of pro-democracy legislators were accused of receiving money from media mogul Jimmy Lai without declaring the funds.

However, the Department of Justice later dropped its investigation into the matter, saying there was a lack of evidence against some lawmakers accused and none whatsoever against others.

Last week, pro-Beijing lawmaker Junius Ho also led a protest against Tai, with demonstrators claiming a speech the law professor gave at a forum in Taiwan earlier this year constituted sedition and encouraged hatred of the central government.
