A vice director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office said on Wednesday that Hong Kong needs to boost teenagers' understanding of the country, its constitution and the Basic Law.

Huang Liuquan was commenting on references to the idea of Hong Kong independence during speeches made by student leaders at university opening ceremonies this month.

Huang said the central government has always made its stance clear on any advocacy of independence for the city, and that is there is zero tolerance for such calls.

He added that young people in the SAR should also take the initiative to learn more about their country.

On Tuesday, Chief Executive Carrie Lam said the talk of Hong Kong independence on university campuses had left her "heartbroken".
