The government has officially moved to ban the pro-independence National Party from operating, based on the Societies Ordinance.

In an extraordinary gazette published on Monday, it said the move was ordered by the Secretary for Security, John Lee.

The party's convenor, Chan Ho-tin, said in a WhatsApp message that he had no response for the moment.

The ban has been under consideration for months, with the administration saying the party was a threat to national security or public safety.

Critics, however, said this would affect people's right to association, as enshrined in Article 27 of the Basic Law.

The National Party made a written submission to the authorities arguing its case after a deadline had passed.
