Police Commissioner Stephen Lo said on Thursday that the organised crime and triad bureau is coordinating the force's response to any activities relating to the now banned Hong Kong National Party.

Lo told a Yau Tsim Mong District Council meeting that his officers are closely monitoring the situation, and action will be taken against anyone associating with the outlawed party, recruiting members, providing the group with money, or offering it a venue to hold meetings.

The pro-independence party was banned by the government under the Societies Ordinance earlier this week, on the grounds that it posed a severe threat to public safety and national security.

Security Secretary John Lee said he had given the order following a recommendation by the police that the party be banned.
