Mainland actress Fan Bingbing has reappeared on social media with a long apology letter praising the government and the Communist Party after state media reported that she has been fined almost 900 million yuan for tax evasion.
Xinhua News Agency quoted the State Administration of Taxation as saying the 37-year-old is to pay 880 million yuan in unpaid taxes and fines, following months of investigation.
The authorities have concluded that Fan and her representatives had evaded tax amounting to 200 million yuan over a movie she starred in recently, "Unbreakable Spirit".
Authorities said the actress will not have to shoulder criminal liability if she repays the 880 million yuan in the time set out. But if she fails to do so, her case will be handed over to the police for follow up action.
Soon after the Xinhua report was released, an apology letter appeared on Fan's Weibo account, in which the actress admits wrongdoing and apologises to the country and her supporters, saying she feels “humiliated” and “deeply regretful” for what she did.
As a public figure, she said should have acted according to the law. She admitted that she had failed to conduct herself properly, and pledged to raise the funds necessary to pay for her unpaid taxes and fines.
“Everything I ever accomplished came from the country and the people’s support”, Fan said. “I would be nothing without the party and the country’s good policies, as well as the love and support of the people”.
She apologised for letting the country and society down, and pledged to be a law-abiding citizen from now on.
Fan, who's China's highest paid actress and a star of Hollywood blockbusters such as “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Iron-Man 3” had disappeared from public view since July after she was accused by another celebrity of tax evasion.
