Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung says the government’s mega reclamation project off Lantau is still just “an idea” rather than a done deal, and the government “hasn’t made a decision to go ahead” yet.
Giving a speech at an event, Cheung called on members of the public to express their views and help move the proposal forward.
The Lantau Tomorrow Vision proposed by Chief Executive Carrie Lam in her policy address aims at reclaiming 1,700 hectares in the waters off Lantau to accommodate 1 million people. The first phase of the plan will be to reclaim 1,000 hectares of land near Kau Yi Chau.
It’s met with strong opposition with critics saying it will be costly and may bring irreversible environmental damages.
