Taiwan's president has expressed her support for the prestigious Golden Horse film awards after a pro-Tawian independence director's speech ignited controversy on the mainland.
President Tsai Ing-wen said in a Facebook post on Sunday that "we have never accepted the term 'Chinese Taiwan' ... Taiwan is just Taiwan".
She added that the Golden Horse Awards highlighted the freedoms that sets Taiwan apart.
Director Fu Yue said during her acceptance speech on Saturday that her biggest hope was for "our country" to be regarded as an "independent entity".
Her film "Our Youth in Taiwan" won best documentary.
Internet users on the mainland had strongly criticised Fu on her Facebook page. (AP)
