The Chief Secretary Carrie Lam on Thursday laid the foundation for a HK$4.1 billion East Kowloon Cultural Centre.

The cultural centre, planned to be opened by 2021, is located near the Kowloon Bay MTR station at the former Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate.

The centre will have a 1,200-seat auditorium, a 550-seat theatre, and three performing studios with smaller capacity – ranging from 120 to 250 seats.

It will also have art shops and areas for holding exhibitions and outdoor performances.

Speaking at the stone laying ceremony, Lam said the centre will serve as an important cultural facility to provide training and performance venues for artists.
