Around two dozen people have staged a protest outside the Foreign Correspondents' Club (FCC) in Central, demanding the club call off a planned talk by Hong Kong National Party leader Chan Ho-tin.

The Hong Kong independence advocate is due to speak at the FCC next Tuesday, just weeks before his party could be banned under the Societies Ordinance for allegedly threatening national security.

The club has refused to cancel the talk, despite a complaint by Beijing officials and criticism from Chief Executive Carrie Lam and her predecessor, CY Leung.

Members of Real Hongkongers View marched from Chater Garden to the FCC on Wednesday morning to voice their displeasure over the club's event.

They waved banners which among other things read "Respect China's sovereignty" and "No room to discuss HK independence", and rejected the idea that Chan will only be exercising his freedom of speech when he attends the event.

"Freedom of speech is not without any conditions. Freedom of speech cannot destroy our right to enjoy social stability or social harmony," said the group's spokesman Jason Lam.

"So I don't think [banning the party] will destroy Hong Kong's freedom of speech."

The protesters denied they were being prompted or paid by anyone to hold the protest. The group also said it plans to stage further action if the club goes ahead with the event.
