National People's Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC) member Tam Yiu-chung said on Tuesday that the security legislation the body has approved for Hong Kong is not "too spicy" and he thinks people won't be worried once they have seen the details.

Tam confirmed the NPCSC had passed the legislation, but gave little away about its contents.

In a video conference with media outlets, he said the full details of the legislation would be published later in the day once the Basic Law Committee had been consulted.

Tam said there would be three types of "rare situations" when those accused of national security offences would be dealt with by mainland courts. But he didn't elaborate.

He said much of the legislation will be in line with Hong Kong's judicial system, adding that he personally finds the terms regarding whether juries will be allowed for trials to be "reasonable," again without explaining further.

He said the law was not "too spicy" and had been formulated in accordance with international standards.

The legislation is widely expected to come into effect on July 1, but Tam said he didn't know if this was the case.
