An elderly patient has died of coronavirus in Hong Kong, raising the death toll to six out of the more than 1,000 people diagnosed with the virus in the SAR. He was a 72-year-old resident at a public housing estate in Sha Tin where there was an outbreak of the infections earlier this month. Wendy Wong reports:
CE says she won't hand-pick judges for security cases

The Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, says she will not unilaterally pick judges to handle future national security trials, even though a draft law being considered by Beijing gives her such powers. Lam says she will instead take advice from the Chief Justice on selecting a pool of judges to handle such cases. As Frances Sit reports, she also accused those who have expressed concerns about her power to choose judges of being 'ignorant':
CY Leung says foreign intervention must be prevented

Former chief executive CY Leung says no country in the world would tolerate its own people approaching another country to place sanctions on it, saying the national security legislation is needed to stop exactly that. He was criticising local politicians who went to the United States and Taiwan to request intervention. Damon Pang reports:

The chairwoman of the Confederation of Trade Unions, Carol Ng, says a large number of workers are not benefiting from the government's job retention subsidy in its anti-epidemic fund. The money is to encourage employers not to fire staff during the pandemic - awarding each retained worker a maximum of HK$9,000 per month, paid via their employers. Ng told Janice Wong that a lot of the money ended up in bosses' pockets:

Animal welfare organisations say they have uncovered serious food safety risks and extreme animal cruelty at farms that supply eggs from hens confined to battery cages, to local supermarket chains Wellcome and Market Place. The groups say the supermarkets' parent company Dairy Farm should follow the example of other multinational retailers by committing to ending the sale of these eggs in their stores.
