Health chief mulls raising legal age for smoking

At a seminar on tobacco control, the health chief has suggested raising the legal age for smoking as one method to ban future generations from buying tobacco products. Last week, the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health said the Health Bureau was considering banning anyone born after 2008 from buying cigarettes in their lifetime. Natale Ching reports:

The woman labelled one of the most dangerous people in the world by the tobacco trade has hailed the work of Hong Kong in bringing down its smoking rates over the past 40 years. But Judith Mackay, director of Asian Consultancy on Tobacco Control, says there are still hundreds of thousands of smokers in the city. She threw her support behind an idea mentioned by the health chief on Tuesday to raise the legal smoking age, saying the average age to take up the habit was under 20, when youngsters brains were not fully-developed. She also told Ben Tse that raising the tobacco tax had a significant impact because then young people could not afford to smoke:
HK residents glimpse total lunar eclipse

A "once-in-a-thousand-year" astronomical event has unfolded above Hong Kong. A total lunar eclipse and the Moon obscuring the planet, Uranus, occurred at around 5.30pm and ended before 9pm on Tuesday night. Scientists say the next window to observe the two events happening together in Hong Kong will be in the year 4862. Huey Pang, president of Astrolink - an NGO that promotes and educates the public about stargazing - explained to Maggie Ho that the Sun, the Earth, the Moon and Uranus were in an almost-perfectly straight line:

China shows off new homemade passenger jet

China has shown off its first domestically-produced large passenger jet, the C919, after the aircraft was approved by regulators. The jet made its appearance at the Airshow China in Zhuhai.
