CE: Beijing interpretation is ‘most appropriate’  Listenfacebook
The Chief Executive John Lee has been defending his decision to request Beijing interpret the national security law, over whether lawyers who are not fully-qualified to practise here can do national security cases. He said this was the "most appropriate" approach. The request was made after the government failed in a legal bid to stop former media mogul, Jimmy Lai, appointing a top British barrister. Lee spoke to reporters as he headed into the weekly Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, just before the Department of Justice applied to adjourn Lai's case, which was to have started on Thursday. Analyst optimistic over local market rally   Listenfacebook
Hong Kong stocks surged over five percent on Tuesday. The Hang Seng Index climbed 906 points to close at 18,204. Market turnover was at nearly $167 billion. Paul Pong from Pegasus Fund Managers says there are still uncertainties for the market, with the US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell due to speak on Wednesday. But Pong told Joanne Wong that he was positive the market rally here could be sustained:

Four plots of land have been chosen as the first sites for the government's proposed light public housing. It is hoped these residential units will shorten waiting times for public housing flats. The light public housing will have less facilities compared with the traditional flats but they can be built more quickly. Damon Pang reports:

The Society for Community Organisation says the proposed four plots of land for building light public housing are too remote. Its deputy director, Sze Lai-shan, says many residents of subdivided flats live in urban areas. She told Damon Pang that while the cheap rents would be attractive, this could be offset by higher costs, such as transport:
Charity warns of manpower shortage in recycling trade  Listenfacebook
A charitable organisation that works to cut plastic pollution says young people here are reluctant to work in recycling because of misconceptions about the work. The group - A Plastic Ocean Foundation - says this has left the industry with a manpower shortage of around 1,000 workers. Vanessa Cheng reports:

The executive director of an environmental charity has called on schools to better educate youngsters about the recycling industry. Willy Kwong from A Plastic Ocean Foundation said there were many misconceptions about the trade, with a third of secondary school students thinking the work was dirty and dangerous, despite much of it now automated. A principal Environmental Protection officer says the government is looking at cutting the plastic content of bags that will be designated for its solid waste charging scheme. Theresa Wu made the revelation on an RTHK programme, after the authorities cited higher-than-expected bidding prices for the failure of a tender for the rubbish bags. Joanne Wong reports:

Mainland health authorities have pledged to boost vaccination rates among China's elderly. The comments came as a senior official admitted to discontent over Covid controls. The Shenzhou-15 spacecraft has blasted off into space. The launch took place at 11.08pm on Tuesday night, and the mission's three taikonauts will embark on a half-year-long mission on the nation's Tiangong space station, during which they will officially finalise the station's construction. Man arrested in UK over 27 migrant deaths  Listenfacebook
A man has been arrested over the deaths of at least 27 people who drowned attempting to cross the English Channel in a dinghy last year. He is set to appear in court in London on Wednesday over extradition to France where he faces manslaughter charges.
