More inspectors to enforce under 18s alcohol ban Listen
Officials say extra inspectors have been hired to enforce a ban on shops selling alcohol to under 18s, which will come into force at the end of the month. At the moment, only licensed premises are covered, but the ban is being extended to supermarkets, convenience stores, vending machines and public events. Maria Tam pays tribute to Sir SY Chung Listen
The man known as the Godfather of Hong Kong politics passed away on Wednesday at the age of 101. Sir SY Chung is best remembered for playing a key role in negotiations about Hong Kong's future before 1997, and serving as ExCo convenor in the first post-handover government. AnneMarie Evans asked Maria Tam, a deputy director of the Basic Law Committee who worked with Sir SY in the handover negotiations - and in both ExCo and LegCo in the colonial government, for her thoughts on Sir SY
Record high support for UN call to ban death penalty: Amnesty Listen
Human rights NGO Amnesty International has reported in an international public statement that there's been record high support for a United Nations call to ban the death penalty. The Third Committee at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday considered a draft resolution on a moratorium on the use of the death penalty. A total of 123 member states - the highest on record - voted in favour of the proposal. AnneMarie Evans put it to William Nee, a researcher at Amnesty International, that it was interesting that the 123 member states that voted for the proposal included countries such as Malaysia, that currently has the death penalty.
