‘Wuhan virus more virulent, but less severe than Sars’ Listen
Infectious diseases specialist Malik Peiris says a large-scale study needs to be carried out in the mainland to find out the true extent of the Wuhan virus epidemic. He says current data suggests that while the new coronavirus may be more infectious than Sars, it appears to be less deadly. Professor Peiris says even though a 39 year old man who was infected with the virus died here on Tuesday morning, he had an underlying health condition. He spoke to RTHK's Annemarie Evans:
Macau shuts down casinos to ward off virus threat Listen
Macau's Chief Executive, Ho Iat-seng, says he had asked all casinos and related entertainment businesses in the city to close for half a month, as the government fears there is now an increasing risk of the Wuhan virus spreading between people. He said closing the casinos was a difficult decision to make, but protecting people's health must be the top priority. Ho also announced that general public services are being temporarily halted, with only emergency services to be provided. Public transport is also being scaled back.
