National laws carrying death penalty could be applied to Hong Kong Listen
Veteran democrat and Senior Counsel, Martin Lee, has warned that Hong Kong risks the possibility of having national laws carrying the death penalty being extended to its people. He says if the Hong Kong government sets a precedent by allowing mainland laws to be applied to a part of the West Kowloon Terminus of the high-speed railway to Guangzhou, they could be extended to other areas in the city in future, and these could include the ones that carry the death penalty. The government's planning to seek authorisation from Beijing under Article 20 of the Basic Law, so that it can lease out space at the terminus to allow mainland authorities to carry out immigration controls and other activities. Lee, who helped draft the mini constitution in the late 1980s, spoke to Annemarie Evans.
Land researchers call for large-scale reclamation Listen
Land researchers at the University of Hong Kong say there is a need for large-scale reclamation in the city and for starters, the government should fill up the Plover Cove Reservoir to build flats there. They say the ecological value of the 1,200 hectare site was already lost when the reservoir was built. The researchers are also proposing 2,000 hectares of reclamation in waters off Tuen Mun -- 10 times the size planned by the government. Professor Chau Kwong-wing from the university's Property Rights Research Centre told Priscilla Ng why there's a need for such a large-scale reclamation.
Wildfires rage across southeast France Listen
Around 12,000 people have been evacuated in France from areas threatened by wildfires that are sweeping across forested land in the southeast of the country. The blaze has spread over a large area along the Mediterranean coast, in the mountainous interior, and on the island of Corsica. RTHK's UK correspondent, Gavin Grey, told Annemarie Evans that the fires are very serious.
