Patients warned about long waits at overwhelmed hospitals Listen
Patients seeking treatment at accident and emergency departments are being warned they may have to wait for eight hours or more, as public hospitals are still inundated with people suffering from the flu. All local hospitals are running well over capacity, and the Hospital Authority is again urging people with relatively minor illnesses to seek help at private clinics instead. Annemarie Evans asked lawmaker Joseph Lee, who represents the health services sector, why there's always a surge of patients after long holidays:
Govt mulls easing restrictions on media cross-ownership Listen
The government is proposing to relax restrictions on media companies that want to expand by buying up competitors. Officials say the rise of online platforms has changed the media landscape, and it's time to bring rules on cross-media ownership up to date. However, there'll still be rules limiting how many licences companies can hold, and foreign ownership of key media firms will still be controlled. A public consultation on the proposals will last three months. Grace Leung, a lecturer at the Chinese University's School of Journalism and Communication, says the changes – if implemented – could mean major players could grow even bigger, and potentially affect the diversity of opinions aired. But she told Jim Gould that the proposals are in line with international standards:
