Shanghai on Saturday had no new coronavirus infections reported outside its quarantine areas, as the financial hub logged another 868 local infections.

Of the latest cases, 84 were symptomatic and 784 did not show signs of infection.

The city also reported one more Covid-related death - an 89-year-old female patient who had suffered from chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease and high blood pressure.

With the reopening of four metro lines happening as planned on Sunday, Shao Weizhong from the city's railway operator said officials are prepared in case of a Covid outbreak.

"If several people are infected, or in the surroundings of the subway stations, there are some severe infectious cases...we may close the subway stations again or ground the train to a halt certainly," Shao said.

"If we found any case, we will register their information and transport this person, in coordination with certain entities, and we will do the quarantine and disinfection work accordingly."

Officials there have also downgraded six areas in the city from medium to low-risk.

Still, Shanghai accounted for the bulk of Covid infections nationwide.

In total, the National Health Commission reported 1,132 domestic cases, including 181 symptomatic infections and 951 asymptomatic ones.

The capital Beijing added 58 local symptomatic cases and 12 asymptomatic infections.

Sichuan province, meanwhile, saw 32 additional cases with symptoms and 77 asymptomatic ones.
