Hong Kong got off to a winning start in their Asian Cup qualifying campaign, withstanding a late rally by Afghanistan in a 2-1 victory.
Goals from Wong Wai and Matt Orr before the half-hour mark gave the SAR a 2-0 lead going into the locker room.
Afghanistan refused to go quietly in this Group D match in Kolkata. An 81st minute goal by Farshad Noor pulled his team to within one.
But Hong Kong managed to hold on to open their Asian Cup qualifiers with a win in a group that also includes hosts India and Cambodia.
The SAR next play on Saturday against Cambodia.
Before the match against Afghanistan, a moment of silence was held for Hong Kong footballer Wong Chun-hin, 26, who died earlier this week.
