From July 1, RTHK will relay two channels of the China Media Group on television and radio, as part of celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Hong Kong with China.

RTHK will relay CGTN Documentary on its new TV34 channel, and Radio The Greater Bay will be broadcast on FM 102.8.

A ceremony was held on Friday in Hong Kong and Beijing simultaneously, with the China Media Group authorising RTHK to relay its channels.

In a video message, Chief Executive Carrie Lam said the new channels will give Hong Kong people more opportunities to understand the latest developments of the country and enhance their sense of civic and national identity.

“In recent years, the global influence of the China Media Group has expanded rapidly and gained widespread attention and recognition both at home and abroad, building a wider bridge to promote Chinese culture and the Chinese brand to the world. I am also a loyal audience of the various channels operated by the China Media Group. I also watch CCTV-1 relay on RTHK’s channel 33 every day, obtaining the latest information about the country,” Lam said.

The president of China Media Group, Shen Haixiong, said the new channels will help people in Hong Kong understand major policies of the Central Government and the national development strategy in a timely manner.

A deputy director of the State Council’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, Wang Linggui, said the airing of national media in Hong Kong is very important, as it will help the SAR community develop a comprehensive and precise understanding and implementation of the One Country, Two Systems principle, better integrate Hong Kong into the national development plan, and promote patriotism.

In a statement, the Director of Broadcasting Patrick Li said RTHK has aimed at establishing a long-term partnership with the China Media Group.

“RTHK sincerely thanks the China Media Group for letting two outstanding channels to be broadcast in Hong Kong,” Li said.
