Health officials on Wednesday reported more than 2,000 Covid infections – 1,849 of which were local cases.

While the numbers remain on the rise, the Centre for Health Protection's Albert Au said there has not been a sudden surge in cases.

"We can see the Covid situation so far, it has been going up gradually in a stable manner, not a sudden, explosive rise. When we look at hospital admission figures, we can see, most cases are light or asymptomatic," he told a daily Covid press conference.

"For serious cases or those requiring admission, or death cases, so far these have still remained at rather stable levels."

A chief manager of the Hospital Authority, Lau Ka-hin, said the rise in caseload has not had an impact on the operation of public hospitals so far.

He said officials have made all the necessary preparations in the event of a mass outbreak, adding that hundreds of beds are readily available for Covid patients.

Lau also said a medical ward at Tseung Kwan O Hospital saw three patients coming down with Covid, including a 88-year-old woman. Two other patients in the same ward have to go into quarantine.

Meanwhile, two elderly care homes and a home for the disabled reported new cases, involving three residents and two workers.

There were no new Covid-related deaths.
