The Hong Kong Observatory says it will issue the Strong Wind Signal No 3 before midnight as Tropical Cyclone Chaba moves closer to the city.

The observatory said the storm's outer rainbands have already brought more than 50 millimetres of rainfall to some areas.

Senior Scientific Officer Cheung Ping said winds will strengthen and showers will become more frequent at night, with thunderstorms and squalls.

He predicted that the weather will get worse in the coming days.

“Winds will be strong with squally showers and thunderstorms tomorrow. Showers will be heavy at times. Strong winds will maintain on Saturday at first,” he said.

“Showers will be heavy at times over the weekend, and the weather is expected to be unsettled early, to maybe, mid of next week."

As there will be swells, Cheung advised members of the public to stay away from the shoreline, and not to engage in water sports.
