The Hong Kong Observatory said it will consider issuing the number eight gale or storm signal between 6 and 9pm on Friday as Severe Tropical Storm Chaba edges closer to Hong Kong.
The Observatory said Chaba continued to track northwest in the past few hours, and according to its present forecast track, it will be closest to the city on Friday evening and Saturday morning, skirting about 300 kilometres to the city's southwest.
Chaba is also expected to further intensify, and local winds will strengthen further.
At 3pm, it was about 390 kilometres south-southwest of the SAR and is forecast to move northwest at about 18 kilometres an hour towards western Guangdong.
