The Observatory issued the first No 8 Storm Signal of the year on Friday evening, with Severe Tropical Storm Chaba intensifying into a Typhoon as it moved closer to Hong Kong.

At 9am on Saturday morning, Chaba was skirting some 320 kilometres to the southwest of the territory. The Observatory said the No 8 signal would remain in force at least until 4pm.

The rainbands associated with Chaba will continue to bring occasional heavy showers and violent gusts to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary. The storm was forecast to move northwest at about 16 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong.

Sustained winds of 98, 82 and 70 kilometres per hour were recorded at Ngong Ping, Cheung Chau and Tap Mun, respectively. There were maximum gusts of 136, 98 and 82 kilometres per hour at those locations.

The Observatory advised members of the public to lock windows and doors and to fix adhesive tape to large, exposed window-panes where possible. It also advised them to stay away from shorelines and avoid water sports, as well as low-lying and flood-prone areas.
