The Dean of Chinese University's medical school, Francis Chan, said on Sunday that the daily number of Covid-19 infections may top 10,000 as the upward trend continues.
Health authorities have earlier voiced concerns over the possible burden on the public health system as the city's daily coronavirus tally exceeded the 4,000-mark for three consecutive days.
Speaking on a radio programme, Chan said beds at public hospitals should be reserved for patients with serious complications from the infection.
He also appealed to members of the public to get their booster shots.
"The numbers are steadily increasing, so I won't feel surprised if the daily new cases are above 10,000 a day. For public hospitals, we have limited number of beds, so we can only cater for those with more severe illnesses or those with complications," he said.
"Therefore, I emphasize that we need to put a lot of preventive measures in terms of receiving booster injections and those who haven't completed the vaccination to receive the vaccination as soon as possible."
He warned that people who recover from the infection might develop long Covid, adding that his university is carrying out a study on the matter.
