The High Court on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment after he was convicted by a jury of murdering his wife over quarrels relating to grocery shopping.
Xiao Chunqiang, 66, was convicted by a majority five to two vote following a ten-day trial.
The court heard that on November 14, 2019, Xiao was told off by his 55-year-old wife for “buying too many fruits and too little pork”.
He subsequently dragged her from the bed to the living room and attacked her with a chopper.
Prosecution said the defendant had never received any education and all his other relatives lived on the mainland. The defence team, meanwhile, said the case was a tragedy for everyone, including the victim and the defendant.
