Latest figures released from the Census and Statistics Department on Thursday showed that the gender imbalance in Hong Kong has widened further.

There were about four million women and around 3.3 million men in 2021. It means excluding foreign domestic helpers, there were 910 males to every 1,000 females, 15 fewer than in 2016 when the last population by-census was conducted.

The latest data also revealed that fewer people got married in 2021.

The crude marriage rates of women and men were 6.7 percent and 8 percent respectively, both down by around 45 percent when compared with 2016.

The crude marriage rate is the annual number of marriages per 1,000 population.

There were 39,953 births in 2021, a decrease of almost 40 percent from 2016.

Meanwhile, the department also found that women still made less money than men.

The median monthly income for women – excluding foreign domestic helpers – was HK$17,500, HK$2,500 less than men.
