Hong Kong politicians have joined in the criticism against the controversial visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei.
Vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, CY Leung, said at a national security education event organised by RTHK that Pelosi's visit does nothing for the people of Taiwan.
"Pelosi's Taipei visit is not in service of human rights, democracy, or freedom of the people of Taiwan," he said. "It is for American interests."
Various political parties, including the DAB, FTU, New People's Party, Liberal Party and Business and Professionals Alliance, issued statements condemning the Pelosi trip, saying the move openly challenges the one-China principle and undermines stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Outside the US consulate in Admiralty, members of the DAB held a protest against Pelosi's trip.
"This is a blatant act to infringe Chinese sovereignty and Chinese territorial integrity. The US government has gone back on their promise on the one-China principle," DAB legislator Holden Chow said.
All 90 legislators issued a joint statement saying Pelosi's behaviour is sending a seriously wrong signal to pro-independent separatist forces in Taiwan.
