The Hong Kong Observatory on Wednesday issued the Standby Signal Number 1 at 10.10pm.

It said that at 6am on Thursday, the tropical depression over the northeastern part of the South China Sea was estimated to be about 110km east-southeast of Hong Kong and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 20km per hour edging towards the Pearl River Estuary.

The storm's outer rainbands will bring squally heavy showers and thunderstorms to the region, it said, adding the circulation of the tropical depression is relatively small.

The observatory urged residents to consider the changes in weather when planning activities and to beware of strong winds over offshore waters.
